The Highway Code
From 29 January 2022, the new Highway Code, with eight new rules and 49 updates, became operational. We at Better Ealing streets made these videos to help people understand those changes.
The highway code is changing, to better protect more vulnerable road users. It establishes a hierarchy of road users, with pedestrians at the top, cyclists and horse riders as vulnerable road users, and puts cars, vans and lorries as the most dangerous road users. Drivers of vehicles, which can cause the most harm, have the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce danger to others. Drivers, motorbike riders and cyclists must give way to pedestrians and cyclists, crossing or waiting, at zebra and parallel crossings.
Drivers, motorbike riders and cyclists should give way to pedestrians, crossing or waiting to cross the road, into which or from which they are turning.
Drivers and motorbike riders should not cut across cyclists or horse riders going ahead. When you are turning into or out of a junction, or changing direction or lane, don’t turn at a junction. If doing so would cause cyclists or horse riders to slow down or swerve, instead, wait for a safe gap before turning in.
Drivers, motorbike riders and cyclists must give way to pedestrians and cyclists, crossing or waiting, at zebra and parallel crossings.
